English cricket is emerging from a transitional stage led by the management of Trevor Bayliss and the ever-reliable Alastair Cook and James Anderson, but there’s plenty of talent waiting in the wings for when the old guard decide to move aside.

The likes Joe Root and Jos Buttler are creating history on the biggest stage, but which prodigious English (and Welsh) talents could join them in the years come? We’ve picked the ones-to-watch for 2016:

  1. This is interesting to read given that you posted it in August 2016. Bell-Drummond just seems to keep getting bypassed. Even if he doesn’t average 50+ I think he’s like Vaughan and Trescothick. He’ll up his game in the international arena. I really hope England don’t give up on Duckett, he could be our David Warner and Sam Curran could have the world at his feet. Shameless plug but please see my latest article where I’ve selected my suggested Test XI for next summer.

I had Aneurin Donald in my fantasy team last year but he had an inconsistent time. Got mucked around in the order in limited overs matches mind. Joe Clarke is the one they’re really keen on now and Hain has returned to form.

It would be pretty cool if the Currans and Overtons all played in the same match. Jamie’s injuries might contribute to that not happening though.

    1. Bell-Drummond scored 127 against the touring Australians for Kent back in 2015, which somewhat supports your suggestion. As too does his captaincy of the MCC XI in today’s Champion County Match at Bridgetown (though he was out for 3).

Duckett’s future seems to sit in his own hands, he certainly has the ability. Good to see Haseeb Hameed back in the runs with 126 for Lancashire against Glamorgan in their UAE training camp today too.

Can’t see Overtons vs Currans coming anytime soon! With Jamie’s injury woes and Tom and Craig (and Sam?) away with the England teams for much of the summer.
